চসার যেমন ইংরেজি পদ্যের জনক, তেমনি বেকন হচ্ছেন ইংরেজি গদ্যের জনক। তাঁর বাক্য গঠন জটিল। বিষয়বস্তু আলোচনায় তিনি কখনো একদেশদর্শী নন। প্রায় প্রতিটি বিষয়ের পক্ষে বিপক্ষে এবং প্রায়োগিক দিক নিয়ে তিনি তাঁর প্রবন্ধগুলোতে আলোচনা করেন। যৌক্তিকভাবে প্রায় প্রতিটি বিষয়ের পক্ষে বিপক্ষে মত দেন যদিও উপসংহারে কোনো মতকেই এককভাবে প্রাধান্য দেন না। 'অব স্টাডিজ' তাঁর তেমনি একটি প্রবন্ধ। কেন পাঠাভ্যাস করা উচিত, পাঠাভ্যাসের সুফল কী, সঠিক পাঠাভ্যাস কোনটি এসব তিনি আলোচনা করেন। শুধু অন্যের মতকে ভ্রান্ত প্রমাণিত করার জন্য, নিজেকে বিদ্বান প্রতীয়মান করার জন্য, মেকি পাণ্ডিত্য জাহির করার জন্য পাঠাভ্যাস বর্জনীয়। পরিশেষে তিনি মত দেন, শরীর চর্চা যেমন শরীর রক্ষার জন্য অপরিহার্য; পাঠাভ্যাসও তেমনি আত্মিক উৎকর্ষ সাধনের জন্য অপরিহার্য।
